Breaking down is stressful. Here's how to stay safe until help arrives.

1When You Break Down

  • Pull over to a safe location as soon as possible
  • Turn on your hazard lights immediately
  • If at night, keep sidelights on
  • Stay calm and assess your surroundings

2Staying Safe While Waiting

  • Exit the vehicle from the side away from traffic
  • Stand well back from your vehicle and traffic
  • Keep pets inside the vehicle (with windows cracked)
  • Don't attempt repairs near traffic

3Motorway Breakdowns

  • Try to reach the hard shoulder or emergency refuge area
  • Leave via the left-hand door when safe
  • Wait behind the barrier, away from your vehicle
  • Use emergency phones to contact Highways England

4Warning Triangle Usage

  • Place at least 45 metres behind your vehicle
  • Never use on motorways (it's illegal and dangerous)
  • Position it where approaching traffic can see it
  • Retrieve it before driving away

Smart Motorway Warning

On smart motorways without a hard shoulder, if you can't reach an Emergency Refuge Area, stop as far left as possible, turn on hazard lights, and exit via the left if it's safe. Stay behind the barrier if possible and call 999.
